He was just worked in the ship's kitchen and not fought in combat due to racial segregation. When the American ship attacked by Japanese in the Pearl Harbor he was in the ship's deck doing laundry.

    Hearing alarm sound he went to the crew's battle station to get a gun. Also, he never had training in his life to use, handle the gun. Since he was strong physically he carried the wounded safely. And started firing at the enemy until they ran out of ship because of ammunition. His actions earned him the commander post of American Pacific Fleet.
