What did japanese military leaders hope to achieve by attacking pearl harbor?

They were hoping to prevent US troops from fighting them in the Pacific. If they managed to destroy the Pearl Harbor base and prevent the US navy from being in the pacific, they would then be able completely use the region with all its benefits without being obstructed by anyone since they had already conquered more or less all important things in the Pacific, the US was the only remaining problem.
