The Southern Democrats have been members of the Dixiecrats. They continued to oppose the civil rights movement and all the progress they have made in responding to the legislation that outlawed segregation. As a result of this legislation, a third party member, George Wallace, was supported by the 1968 presidential election. They backed George Wallace because he supported the Segregation Act.
