City dwellers became entranced with the west because of poverty and poor conditions of cities like New York during the time of westward expansion. This is because many people were offered land for very cheap which allowed them to farm rather than have to work and live in the city. For others, it was for privacy and peace. Remember, the cities during this time were heavily crowded by new immigrants from all over the world, where as the new western territories were fresh land with far less people.
