    The answer is both.

The American Revolution and the Revolutionary war are two sides of the same coin. The American Revolution refers to the more general movement that led to the independence of the U. S., while the Revolutionary War refers to the battles that took place.

Both events stemmed from colonial opposition to mercantilism and taxation without representation. The American Colonies wanted to trade freely among themselves, and with other colonies in the Americas, not just with Britain, and the also wanted to have their own representatives in the British Parliament.

Both things denied, and increasing taxation and oppression finally led to the break out of the American Revolution.
