This was a war strategy of the Union in the late stages of the Civil War. Armies would use all available resources to destroy the Confederate's ability to resist.

    Total war, as you can infer, anything was used to win. They threw as much men as possible, they destroyed crops, stole, burnt anything they didn't use, broke railroads any much more.
