The Ottoman Empire that was founded in Anatolia lasted from 1299 to 1922, comprised of vast territories in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Europe. This empire participated in World War I and got quickly defeated (alongside the allied Germany).

Various imperialist and nationalist forces on the Ottoman empire began to weaken it and threaten its political stability in mid-nineteenth century. During the same period, the Otopano Empire was known as the "weak man of Europe".

Tsar Nicholas I who reigned as Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855, coined the phrase "Sick Man of Europe".
