Railroads avoided the cities in North Carolina during the Industrial Revolution and mainly serviced rural areas. During the Industrial Revolution, counties in northwestern North Carolina were least impacted by the railroad expansion. Counties in southwestern North Carolina felt little impact from the railroad expansion that took place during the Industrial Revolution.

    During the Industrial Revolution, North Carolina's railroads grew rapidly, spurred at first by Republican policies during Reconstruction. By the end of the century, the state was criscrossed by railroads.
