Stalin faced economic issues where he realized that the USSR wasn't as developed as his western rivals. This made him force his people work a lot harder making the Russian economy much better. His military soldiers were often not in support of him and caused The Great Purge which lead to multiple executions of soldiers. In World War 2, he turned his back on Hitler which led to its defeat.
