Why was George Washington the obvious choice to be the first president?

Washington was general of the Continental army and had risked his life numerous times for the freedom of the patriots. He carried the revolution on his back at times, especially when the Continental army were at bad odds in regards to winning the war.

he was possibly the only true viable choice as he was both a national hero and the favourite son of virginia.
