The Boxer rebellion which happened from 1900-1901 was caused by strong anti-foreigner sentiment by the secret organization called the Boxers who wanted to drive out anything foreign from their country including the people and the Chinese who associated with them. The rebellion was put down by a foreign coalition. But its effect was that it made the government reconsidered the necessity of the fundamental reforms which the rebellion and the foreign intervention made clear were needed.
