    Answer: Fort Donelson was a big fortress built by the Confederate Army during the Civil War to control the Cumberland River, which ran from Tennessee and the heart of the Confederacy. This fort was named after Conf. Gen. Daniel Donelson. Battle of Fort Donelson was in 1862, which Gen. Grant took over.
