In ancient Greece sea travel allowed the islands of the Greek archipelago to expand their cultural and economic horizons through trade. Archaic Greek art was influenced by the Egyptians, and the Greek alphabet was derived from the Phoenician alphabet. Traveling by sea allowed the Greeks to establish colonies in Southern Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean.
