Throughout the entire Cold War, but most importantly after Vietnam, the conflict between the United States and those nations that were the very columns of Communism: The Soviet Union mainly, and China, instead of decreasing, increased. The United States came to the realization that it was up against two powerful nations, with as much maritime power, and nuclear power (on Soviet side, at least), that could threaten the U. S. On Northern Europe the Soviets had almost full control, and their maritime power was great at the time, not to mention that they had as much nuclear power as the U. S. On the other front sat China, with enough maritime power to threaten the U. S on the Far East front. This is why the answer is Northern Europe and the Far East.
