The kingdom divided because people refused to be ruled by the king who imposed very high tax rates.

    Explanation:

Solomon was a king of great works, also generating great expenses. To pay these expenses the people had to pay more taxes.

After the death of the king the people addressed the successor Rehoboam asking for the reduction of the heavy charges placed on them. Rehoboam, following the advice of his young friends, said that in his kingdom the yoke would be heavier than that of his father.

After this decision of Rehoboam the people refused to continue being governed by him. And they set up the king of Israel, Jeroboam, and the tribe of Judah and Benjamin under Rehoboam. Thus the kingdom of Israel was divided, and Judah and Benjamin formed the kingdom of the south, and the rest of the ten tribes the kingdom of the north.
