Christopher Columbus went to the sea as a young man. After being shipwrecked off the coast of Portugal in 1476, he came to the city of Lagos, but stayed there only for some time and made his way to Lisbon where he had a brother who worked as a mapmaker. From Lisbon, he sailed on merchant voyages as far as Ghana, Ireland and even Iceland. During his time in Portugal, he also married a girl, named Dona, who was a daughter of a nobleman. In 1480, their son was born, and later in 1485, she died.
