The First Battle of Bull Run or First Battle of Manassas took place on July 21, 1861, and was the first large-scale battle of the Civil War.

This battle had the scoop that troops were delivered by rail to the front. Another peculiarity was that the battlefield was visited by "battle" tourists from nearby Washington, D. C. (only 40 km away), who sometimes wanted to see how their superior army would teach the rebels a lesson: but things went differently.

The Confederates with 30,000 men under the command of Brig. Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard defeated the army of 40,000 Unionists (led by Brigadier General Irvin McDowell).

The Southern name for this battle is "First Battle of Manassas" because the Southern army had its headquarters in the town of Manassas; while that of the Northern army was near the Bull Run river. More than a year later, the Second Battle of Bull Run would take place.
