How did some of the ideas of the populist party influence twentieth century politics?

The New Deal of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Frontier of President John F. Kennedy have been considered initiatives of "progressive populism." Instead, the BBC has described the government of US President Ronald Reagan as "conservative populism."

In the United States, as in Latin America, the term "populism" is used to disqualify the characteristics of opposition candidates from both the right and the left. In the campaign for the presidential elections of 2008, the newspaper El País (of Spain) negatively described as "populist" both Hillary Clinton and Obama. For his part, President George W. Bush has also been considered a populist.
