The Olmec were the first major civilization in Mexico ... Appearing around 1600 BCE, the Olmec were among the first Mesoamerican complex societies, and their culture influenced many later civilizations, like the Maya. The Olmec are known for the immense stone heads they carved from a volcanic rock called basalt.

The thing that is significant in the establishment of the Olmec Civilization is that due to its prominent practices in their culture, its effect can still be felt until today, even though the Olmec Civilization has been gone for a while now. Their culture was handed down to the civilizations that followed theirs in their region (near Mexico).
