How did the platt amendment make independent nation of Cuba a protectorate of the United States

At the end of the Spanish-American war in 1901, the Platt Amendment was passed, this amendment stipulated the conditions for the withdrawal of American troops from the island of Cuba.

This amendment was an essential factor between the relations of the United States and Cuba, it basically meant that Cuba would regain its sovereignty but the United States reserve the right to intervene and assert its power.

Under these stipulations Cuba became more of a protectorate of the United States rather than a fully sovereign country.
