The idea of a Bill of Rights was what the anti-federalists wanted in the new US Constitution. This group of individuals felt that the new system of government gave too much power to the federal (aka central) government. The anti-federalists wanted a bill of rights put into the Constitution that ensured that the federal government would not take away key rights of American citizens. This includes the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to bear arms, etc.
