    The Know-Nothing Party was an American political party in the 1850s. The movement consisted of and was driven mostly by secret societies, and aimed to preserve the United States of America as an Anglo-Saxon Protestant state through harsh restrictions on immigration from non-Protestant countries.

    Know-Nothing had a geographical origin in the cities along the northeast coast of the United States. Most of the new immigrants who flowed there during those years were Catholic, while the majority of the United States population was Protestant. Anti-Catholicism was very prominent in all the movement. Their candidates did very well during the elections in 1854, especially in the states of Massachusetts and Delaware, and in 1855 they took the name American Party and gave up most of their secret scare.
