Human sacrifices occupied a particularly important role in Mesoamerican cultures. Not only did Aztecs, but the Maya and the Mexica believed that human sacrifice nourished gods. Without human sacrifices, the sun was believed to cease to rise and the coming of the world to an end will occur.

So Aztecs sacrificed people to god Huitzilopochtli for which the victim would be placed on a sacrificial stone. The priest would then cut through the abdomen with obsidian made blade. The heart would be torn out still beating and held towards the skies in honor of the Sun God.

Archaeologists believe is likely that almost 20,000 people were sacrificed a year in the Aztec Empire. Of course in special festivals, they demanded more blood.
