General Robert E. Lee was the commander of the Confederate Forces during the Civil War. After a series of key defeats, that resulted in the loss of the Confederate control of the towns of Petersburg and Richmond, he gradually started to retreat and lose ground to the Union Forces. He would eventually sign the Confederacy's surrender on April 9, 1865, in Appomattox, Virginia.
