    As I wrote elsewhere: The doctrine of selective incorporation refers to the Courts applying the Bill of Rights selectively to the States. As time has progressed, more of the rights have applied to the State governments. This is important as when the Bill of Rights were written, they were only a check on the Federal Government. Over time, though, they have been applied to the States as well.
