Wisconsin voters refused to reelect McCarthy, who lost his seat in the Senate. McCarthy hinted that President Eisenhower himself was sheltering Communists. McCarthy charged that there were Communists in the U. S. Army.

McCarthy accused hundreds of people throughout the course of the early 1950's. American sentiment went against McCarthy when he accused some of the top generals in the US military of being communist.
