Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821 came with a crisis because the country had suffered a great deal during the war, near a half million Mexicans had died, the economic activities (agricultural and industrial) was weakened during the war, and the creation of a new country brought two political groups: conservatives who wanted to continue Spain's form of government, and liberals who wanted to create a democratic republic.

Struggle between this two groups was the main political challenge after Mexico gained independence and became a new country.
