The correct answer is c) It was a nationalistic and retaliatory move to bring control of the canal under Egypt's command.

Since 1869 the Suez Canal remained under British and French control. After WWII Egypt pressed for evacuation of British troops from the zone of the Canal and President Nasser decided to nationalize the canal.

This started the Suez Crisis that led to Israel invade and British and French troops to occupy the canal zone. Later, in 1957, they withdrew and Egypt took control of the canal and reopened it to commercial shipping.
