The Province of New Jersey was originally founded in the 1610s, as part of the colony of New Netherlands. The surrender of Fort Amsterdam in September 1664 gave control over the entire Mid Atlantic region to the British in the framework of the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The British justified the attack by saying that John Cabot, an Italian under the patronage of King Henry VII, had been the first to discover the place. Peter Stuyvesant, General Director of the colony, relinquished control of the colony and was able to obtain guarantees of property rights, inheritance laws, and freedom of religion in transfer articles, so the newly Province of New Jersey and its people enjoyed those rights and freedoms.
