What does keeping east and west berlin separate lead too?

Separation of East and West Berlin led to a large difference in the economic handling of each side of the city. The Soviet side (East) was very poor and poverty-ridden, while the Allies' side (West) was quickly recovering from the second world war. Once the Berlin Wall fell, which separated each side, it became apparent that each side of Berlin was completely different.
