Abraham Lincoln lose the election of 1858 because (D.) democrats won a majority in the Illinois legislature.

During this time, U. S. Senators were elected by the state legislatures and not by the vote of citizens. In that way, the democratic party leader Stephen A. Douglas got a majority in the Illinois legislature, which made him win the elections. The percentage of votes that Douglas got was 54%, while Lincoln's percentage was 46%, leading up to a difference of 8%.
