The short answer is that the Germanic tribes came down and after losing to the Romans in battle for a few hundred years, finally figured out how to defeat the Romans and marched into Rome and sacked the city.
The long answer involves a crumbling and corrupt empire tired of unstable leaders and ready to reclaim regional identities.
