Labour unions were not very successful in achieving their goals in the 1800s.

Workers organized unions to solve their problems. Their problems were low wages and unsafe working conditions.

The tactics used by labour unions were strike and collective bargaining. The disagreement between the needs of the employers and the demands of the employees gave rise to the evolution of the unions. The workers could not only bargain for their salary but also working conditions, job security and benefits through the union. Initially, workers formed local unions in single factories. These unions used strikes to try to force employers to increase wages or make working conditions safer.
