The Peloponnesian War (431-404 B. C. E.) was a conflict between Sparta (Thebes and Corinth) and Athens (Delian League) The warfare began in the aftermath of the Greco-Persian War. Athens amassed great power and Sparta became increasingly jealous. The war led to the defeat of Athens. Athens was left without resources and humiliated. Sparta took over the Athenian state and its tribute revenues. For a time, Athenian democracy was suspended.
