Compromise of 1850 *

Allowed California in as a free state, New Mexico and Utah territories to decide about slavery, outlawed slave trade in Washington, D. C., and strenthened fugitive slave law.

Supreme Court decision that held that African Americans could never be citizens of the United States and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.
