The failure of the Wilmot Proviso only put off the issue of slavery for so long. With the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded over 525 square miles of territory to the US in exchange for $15million and the assumption of Mexican debts to American citizen, which reopened the slavery issue
