How was the pre-Civil War economy of Texas similar to the economies of the rest of the south?

    The Texan economy prior to the Civil War was in the same situation as that of the rest of the south of the country: it was an agricultural-cattle economy, which based its strength on slave labor.

    Texas, due to its population size, was one of the main southern economies, with which it could afford greater economic diversification. Thus, in the cities, there was more commercial and manufacturing activity than in the other southern states. But, in essence, the state of Texas had cattle farming as its economic engine.
