There were two legends that the Spanish heard that made them believe the existence of so much gold. One was the legend of the city of El Dorado, somewhere in Colombia, in the middle of the jungle. The other legend was that Aztec Emperor Montezuma had mines and bullions of gold that were someplace in the area of Tenochtitlan. Of course, that gold was never found.
