1. As the population of slaves grew, masters were more and more afraid of rebellion.

2. They were considered the property of their owners.

3. They couldn't assemble without a white person present and they couldn't testify in court against a white person.

4. Their Christian masters taught them to read the Bible.

5. It made it easier to break up families by selling one slave to another owner.
