This action would be in direct violation of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), which prohibited European intervention in governments of the Western hemisphere. This policy borne of concerns caused by the War of 1812 and the resurgence of European nationalism after the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815 and a renewed commitment to monarchism embodied following Napoleon's defeat and exile to the Isle of Elba in 1815. The Russians had also made claims to the Pacific northwest. In short, the United States would not have tolerated Great Britain's interference in Argentine affairs.
