    Anti-Semitism in Europe during the 1880s caused many Jews to relocate to Palestine. Before immigration began in 1880, Palestine's Jewish population numbered about 25,000. During the Otoman Empire and prior to this, there existed an indigenous Jewish population in Palestine. Its members were concentrated principally in the holy cities of Jerusalem, Tiberias, Safed and Hebron. They had been deeply rooted there for numerous generations.
