    During the 1840's, the abolitionist movement and the women's rights movement coincided with each other. Both were fighting for social, legal, and political equality in American society. Many advocates of the women's rights movement used their voice to also fight for rights of African Americans within the US. Despite this reciprocal relationship, only African American men were given the right to vote after the end of the Civil War.

    This resulted in the continued fight by women in order to gain the right to vote. Women would not gain the right to vote until 1920.
