    Fort Henry and Donelson are significant because they provided successful defense for the Union army. During the Battle for Fort Henry, the Union army secured an important victory for the Union. During the Battle at Fort Donelson, the Union capture of the Fort closed a vital avenue of invasion by the Confederates.
