    1. b. Potentially is extraordinarily productive, but requires considerable organized labor to make so

Murphy's estimation about East Asia has been based on what he saw, examined, and what he learned about the region. One of the things that caught his eye was that the region has great potential and that it can be very productive. This was based on the soil, climate, and plants that were cultivated in the region. In order for this potential to be fulfilled though, Murphy says that it is required a lot of labor force, and not just that, but excellent organization of it so that the high productiveness can be achieved.

    2. a. Disruptive and leading to social disharmony

The East Asian societies have differed in numerous ways from the societies around the world, and of the most important things was how they view on the pursuit of individual goals, ambition, and successful competition. The people of this region saw this things as disruptive and and leading to social disharmony. In this region, traditionally, the collective has been the most important, not the individual, and everyone has been working for the greater good for all. In a way we can say that these societies were actually having social organizations and beliefs similar to the communism, which came on the scene much later.
