    It was Dante.

    Explanation:

    That can be seen from his most famous book Inferno, where Virgil is actually leading Dante through underworld. Of course, this is normal, because the writers of this period, including Dante, Petrarca and others were heavily influenced by Greek and Roman art. So, quite often they would include some of the characters from that period.
