The president and other federal officials may be impeached for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors" under Article II of the Constitution.

    Explanation:

Impeachment, according to Section 4 of Article II of the Constitution, provides for prosecution by removal from office of federal employees, including the president, if "they are found guilty of treason, bribery or other serious crimes and misconduct".

The House of Representatives has the exclusive prerogative to formulate and bring charges. A vote must be taken here to refer the matter to the Legal Committee of the House of Representatives, where the allegations are being investigated. If grounds for impeachment are found, an actual indictment is prepared, which, after approval by the committee, is sent to the House of Representatives of the whole, where approval requires a simple majority of votes.

If the House of Representatives supports the proposal, the next step should be the approval of impeachment in the upper house of Congress - the Senate. The charges are transferred to the Senate of Congress, where the procedure turns into a lawsuit, in which the House of Representatives actually acts as a party to the prosecution, and senators act as members of the jury. For impeachment to take place, at least two-thirds of the votes of senators are required (at least 67).

The procedure is applicable for the removal of the President of the United States, a number of federal officials and judges (the only exception to the principle of the irremovability of judges). In addition to being removed from office, the Senate may be punished with a ban on holding positions in the US federal service (including even unpaid honorary posts).
