Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia was first opened in 1904 as an army station for cavalry training during World War I, and it also harbored more than two thousand German prisoners of war and civilian convicts. Years later, during World War II, it functioned as an important training center for the Women's Army Corps. Then, in 1946, it closed and became the center of the present town Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia.
