The United States wanted to promote democracy throughout the world, while the USSR wished to spread a single-party system.

During the second world war, the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union were necessary Allies. But, disagreements and unresolved histories between the Soviet Union and the United States would reestablish themselves once the war ended. There was much concern and negotiations by both parties as to the future of the remaining European countries. Once the war ended and repairing war torn Europe and Japan well underway, the main goals of the United States where to establish Democracy throughout the world, promote open markets and avoid another major depression. The goals of the Soviet union were to promote Communism, enrich and expand their empire from the countries they had liberated, thereby use the resources of those counties and have a greater market for the goods they produced.
