    Fort Sumter restrained the way to the port of Charles-town South Carolina one of the most influential ports in the South. With the Union forces in command of Fort Sumter, the north could intercept any shipping coming in and out of Charles-town. Charles-town was necessary for the export of cotton necessary for the economic survival of the South.
