In 1925, sociologist Ernest Burgess created the Concentric Zone Model to identify and explain urban social structures. He studied the case of the city of Chicago Illinois and developed a model of concentric rings. In the middle was the city's business center, then a factory zone followed by a transition zone. Then, a working zone, followed by a residential zone, and the last ring was a commuter zone.
